Volume 3: Russell 1911-1950 08.01.25 - Flipbook - Page 4
The Virginian may have been the only book that featured illustrations by
both Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington. It also inspired the
popular 1960s television show by the same name.
This collection contains 29 books covering 100 years of various versions of
The Virginian, all of which retained the same Russell illustrations
throughout the years. All editions of the book contain 42 Russell line
engravings, all of which are contained herein and shown with an asterisk
indicating the first time the picture was published, according to Yost and
Renner. Some include a color frontispiece.
A great description follows:
“Although a novel, this book probably created more impressions of what a
cowboy was like – even among cowboys – than any other work fact or
fiction. Its popularity is attested to by sales of over two million copies.”
