You likely know the name Frederic Remington. While both Remington and
Russell are regarded as the two most famous western artists of their time,
Remington completed approximately 2,000 works, while Russell completed
over 4,000 art pieces during his remarkable life and career.
• Russell was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1864 and died in Great Falls, Montana in
1926 at the age of 62.
• Russell was the highest paid artist in American art at the time of his death.
• In recent years, two of his paintings have sold for $5.6 million each.
• Russell’s drawing “Waiting for a Chinook” is the simple,
small piece of artwork that made him famous.
• At age 32, Russell married Nancy Cooper and she became
his steadfast partner and business broker for his artwork.
• Known as Charlie, C.M., Chas., and most famously as “The Cowboy Artist.”
• In the US capitol, every state is represented by two bronze statues. Montana’s
statues include one of Charles M. Russell.
• In 1971, Karl Yost and Frederic Renner (YR) wrote the “bible” on Russell, detailing
